Civil Registry

For general information on the civil registry please visit the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Italian only).

The Civil Registry includes all variations in Italian citizens' civil status. Civil status refers to that set of facts or events, which affect the lives of citizens, such as birth, marriage, death, and divorce. Italian citizens are required to register all changes in their civil status (producing the relevant documents or other documentation) occurring during their stay in Israel with the consular office competent for the area where the event occurred.

Procedure. To request the free registration in the Civil Registry of specific variations of their civil status, Italian citizens are requested to:

- Fill out an application form choosing among the following:

a) Registration of a birth certificate.
b) Registration of a marriage certificate..
c) Registration of a death certificate.
d) Transmission of divorce sentence through affidavit "Dichiarazione sostitutiva di atto notorio".

- Arrange an appointment with the Consular Chancery of the Embassy of Italy in Tel Aviv.
- Submit the following documents at the appointment:

1. The above mentioned form duly filled-in and signed.
2. For Italian citizens not registered in the Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (A.I.R.E.): Italian passport or a valid Italian identity card.
3. Documentation:

a) For the registration of a birth certificate: original of birth certificate with the apostille of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and translation by a translator known to the Embassy. Please note the birth certificate must contain the maiden surname of the mother.

b) For the registration of a marriage certificate: original of marriage certificate legalized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with the apostille of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs  and translation by a translator known to the Embassy.

c) For the registration of a death certificate: death certificate with the apostille of theIsraeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and translation by a translator known to the Embassy.

d) To request the transmission of a divorce sentence through affidavit "Dichiarazione sostitutiva di atto notorio":

1) Divorce certificate issued by the local Rabbinate (in case of Jewish persuasion) or by the Sharia Court (Muslim persuasion) legalized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with the apostille of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and translation by a notary known to the Embassy.

2) Protocol and divorce sentence issued by the civil or religious Court legalized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with the apostille of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and translation by a notary known to the Embassy.

3) Statement of the Directorate of the Rabbinical Courts (Jewish persuasion) or Sharia Court (Islamic persuasion) certifying that the divorce is final and that no appeal can be filed against it, with the apostille of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and translation by a notary known to the Embassy.

4) A valid Italian passport and a copy thereof.
